I have had diabetes for about 14 years – the sugar was relatively easy to control in the time immediately after my diagnosis. My body probably still has a few insulin-producing cells left, so I only had to inject some basal insulin.
Technically I was equipped with insulin pens filled with Humalog & Lantus and the FreeStyle Lite measuring device. I was fine with that for a while, but during my studies the “honeymoon phase” subsided, my lifestyle changed and the sugar didn’t want it the way I wanted it.
Little by little I became interested in new technologies in the field of diabetes, so after 10 years of diabetes I used an insulin pump for the first time. In addition, I have been a proud CGM carrier (continuous glucose measurement) for about 5 years. Since this technology my therapy changed abruptly and I became more interested in my values.
GETTING INTO A CLOSED-LOOP SYSTEM
A CGM system and a Bluetooth-enabled insulin pump are the cornerstones of an artificial pancreas or closed-loop. An app connects both components so that the pump switches on or off depending on whether the values are too high or too low.
I have been using this closed loop for a year now and have been able to significantly improve my nightly blood glucose curves in particular. However, the strong fluctuations during the day remained more or less the same and this is exactly where the meala app is used.
MEALA APP – MEAL APP WITH FOCUS ON DIABETES
The Meala App stores my meals along with many other data and GPS information. This makes it easy to find this meal at a later time. This has the advantage that the same or similar dishes do not have to be appreciated again. The learning effect is enormous and can be transferred to other dishes, so that the blood sugar is positively influenced lastingly. I myself have learned how a large distance between injections and meals is decisive for me. With this knowledge and the own meal data base also new courts are no more challenge. The feeling of having a stable sugar after every meal is very relieving. I would like to make this feeling possible for other people and have recently released the first app version for Android and iOS.
